Lichtenstein Pop Art
AMoA Art Challenge #7

Terri Martin, Juror
Juror’s Statement

This artist's digital illustration perfectly captures Roy Lichtenstein's process by superbly executing his most signature element, the Ben Day dots. This, coupled with the juxtaposition of using a natural landscape as its subject matter, further emulates Lichtenstein's stamp in the Pop-Art movement as well as amplifies the simple beauty of one of our community's most beloved landmarks.

CASSATT MOTHER & CHILD
AMoA Art Challenge #6

Kim Mahan, Juror
Juror’s Statement

All three of the winning entries this week, as well as the honorable mention, eloquently reveal the loving bond between a mother and child.  Whether the child is expressing her love by helping the mother with the burdens of her work, or the mother is expressing her love with a warm embrace and careful attention, all reveal the powerful bond between the two.

MATISSE CUT-OUTS
AMoA Art Challenge #5

Parks Lowe, Juror
Juror’s Statement

While there were very interesting efforts entered in this art challenge, my choice for First Place was based on the artist’s use of bold color and shapes that Matisse introduced so successfully into the art world. Relying solely on the cut paper technique, this artist achieved color movement and yet composed a sense of balance at the same time.

SURREALISM with SALVADOR DALI
AMoA Art Challenge #4

Stephanie Jung, Juror
Juror’s Statement

I’d like to thank Deana Craighead, the AMoA, and all the artists who submitted work for “Surrealism with Salvador” for the opportunity to jury such a fun group of artworks! Surrealism seems to hit just the right note for our current situation, and Salvador Dali, with his embrace of anxiety, irony, horror, humor (and even his fondness of the “selfie”) is the perfect inspiration for this contest.

1st Place

A realistically executed colored pencil drawing of a militia figure standing guard as the now-ubiquitous COVID-19 spheres rain from the sky and Dali’s iconic eyeball sets over the desolate landscape. The work’s multiple possible interpretations remind us that Dali wasn’t afraid of controversy.

RODNEY NICHOLS (Adult)
The Branch Covidian
Pen and watercolor on paper

2nd Place

The misplaced features, screaming mouth and outstretched hands of this gestural oil on canvas work speak volumes about the figure’s mental state. Relatable!

KELLEY MICKEY (Adult)
Scream Corona Scream
Oil on canvas

3rd Place

A photographic work that features an adventurous family, most of whom are wearing the recognizable Dali moustache. I appreciated the effort to create the “earth ship” and the bold poses of the “sailors.”

FRANK STELLA and the ART OF THE PROTRACTOR
AMoA Art Challenge #3

Jon Revett, Juror
Juror’s Statement

A few years ago I had the luxury of seeing the Frank Stella retrospective at both the Whitney Museum of Art and the Ft. Worth Modern. Both venues exhibited his work in different ways, and being able to compare and contrast installations highlighted the diversity of his body of work. Stella is one artist who has been able to shift his styles and maintain a successful art career, but I always come back to the Protractor series. They speak to me and something clicks in my brain when I look at them. It is very inspirational to see his work connecting with others as well, and I enjoyed all of the submissions.

1st Place

Great job taking Stella’s concept and improvising on it.

MICHELLE SWITZER (adult)
Windows of Stella
Watercolor and marker

2nd Place

The use of mixed media alludes to some of Stella’s newer work while retaining the essence of the Protractor series.

JUNE ROGERS (Age 11)

3rd Place

The tondo composition references the true genius of the Protractor series: the shaped canvas.

McKENNA THOMASON (Adult)

Honorable Mention

Basically how I feel when I look at Stella’s work. Keep it up, kid!
