EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH

Through tours and school visits, you and your students are given the opportunity to explore AMoA’s collection, exhibitions and outreach programs. Whether you plan to bring your students to AMoA or book a museum educator to visit your school, museum experiences support the development of visual literacy, encouraging students to look closely at works of art, ask and answer questions and make personal connections.

All programs utilize elements of Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) as a means by which to develop critical thinking and observation skills and are conducted by trained staff and museum volunteers.

COME to AMoA!

Because of the generosity of our community during #ThePanhandleGives Campaign, the museum is able to offer FREE SCHOOL TOURS for all independent school districts and private schools in the 26 County Texas Panhandle region.  While funds last, students will tour the galleries, be inspired by the art they see, and create their very own, original masterpieces to take home at no charge. 

AMoA Tours aim to inspire curiosity and foster lifelong relationships between students and art through interactive, inquiry based explorations of art. Reservations are required for all group visits, even self-guided tours. Contact Colby Currie to reserve your visit, (806) 371-5050 or crcurrie@actx.edu.

Please plan ahead. Tours range in duration from 30 to 90 minutes and groups of 10 or more, whether lead by a Museum docent/staff or self-guided by a teacher, must contact the Museum to arrange the visit. Groups without advance reservations cannot be assured that the museum will be able to accommodate them. All visits must be reserved at least 2 weeks in advance.

SELF-GUIDED TOUR  |  FREE!
Explore the museum on your own!  Your group is invited to visit the museum and explore the current exhibitions at your own pace. Visit includes admission to all of the museum’s galleries.

DOCENT-LED TOUR  |  $1.50 Per Person
Bring art to life for your students! Docents will lead your class on an adventure through art and history and there is always something new to see at AMoA! Visit will include a guided tour of the museum and a TEKS integrated program that utilizes Visual Thinking Strategies to develop critical thinking and observation skills.

ENHANCED TOUR  |  $2.75 Per Person
Give your students a chance to view AMoA’s exhibitions as well as experience a hands-on art activity! Docents will lead your class through exhibitions, explaining the artists and their works, while engaging the students in discussion. The hands-on art activity will help the students better understand the art they have seen during the tour. Visit will include a guided tour of the exhibitions, a hands-on art activity and a TEKS integrated program that utilizes Visual Thinking Strategies to develop critical thinking and observation skills.

BRING AMoA TO YOU!

These  programs are approximately one hour per session. Programs are limited by space and time available at your location, which will be addressed during scheduling.
 

OPTION #1
ARTifact Case | $25 per week

Book an ARTifact Case for your classroom and give your students the opportunity to learn about the art, history and culture of various regions/civilizations.  Each ARTifact Case contains reproduction artifacts and an ARTifact Portfolio complete with a description of each item, vocabulary, discussion prompts, classroom activities, step-by-step instructions for related art activities and other resources.

OPTION #2
ARTifact Case with Curator | $3 per student

Prefer to have an AMoA staff member in your classroom? A case curator will bring your chosen ARTifact Case and its contents to your school for discussion and exploration in addition to facilitating a hands-on art project related to the culture represented in the case.

ART OF ANCIENT EGYPT  Exploring the land of pyramids, students will learn about the art and culture of Ancient Egypt.  How and why were the pyramids built? What is a sarcophagus and why was it made?  What is the symbolism behind images of humans and animals? What is the art of hieroglyphics?  Students will learn the answers to these questions and more.

ART OF INDIA AND SOUTHEAST ASIA  Students will learn about the art and culture of India and Southeast Asia by exploring symbolism, philosophies and customs. Focusing on traditions, festivals and celebrations, students will explore the art of this diverse culture. This program is recommended to be paired with a tour of the Dr. and Mrs. William T. Price Collection of Asian Art.

ART OF JAPAN  Students will learn about the art and culture of Japan.  Beginning their journey in the early Edo Period and travelling through the land of the Samurai, students will be exposed to the myths and culture that helped create an incredible body of work that spans the centuries.

NATIVE AMERICAN ART Students will learn about the art, culture and history of the Native American indigenous peoples. Explore the great cultural diversity of American Indians, focusing on the American Southwest region. Art is an integral part of their culture, with many contemporary artists still being trained by their family and community.

ART OF MEXICO  Students will learn about ancient and modern art from our immediate neighbor, Mexico. Artifacts will teach your students about ancient tribes such as the Mayans and the Aztecs. Objects such as Nichos and Retablos will be used to teach students about Mexican folk art and its popularity worldwide. Students will create their own Nichos, helping them understand the relationship between culture and the people who inspire it.

OPTION #3
AMoA Art Experiences | $3 per student

AMoA Art Experiences are specially designed to discuss historical movements in the history of art. AMoA will visit your school and provide a hands-on lecture followed by an immersive art experience designed to reflect the art and culture highlighted in the lecture, resulting in a work of art for each child to keep.

IMPRESSIONISM: THE SCIENCE OF LIGHT AND COLOR Spontaneous, bold and considered the rebels of their time, the artists of the Impressionist Period studied light, color and optics to improve their ability to capture a “moment in time.” Using Impressionist artworks as a guide, your class will learn the science and technique behind the Impressionist style of painting.

MODERN ART: A 20TH CENTURY MOVEMENT Students will learn about the Modern Art movement in the early 20th Century and how it changed the creation of art today. Your class will journey through the social, political, and emotional drive behind the art and its influence on Western culture.

GEORGIA O’KEEFFE: COLOR AND SHAPES OF THE SOUTHWEST Beginning her career in the Texas Panhandle, O’Keeffe is known for her ability to say things with color and shapes that she couldn’t say any other way, things she had no words for.  Students will learn about O’Keeffe’s life in Texas and New Mexico and explore the colors and shapes of the Southwest while learning about her influence on contemporary American Modernism.
